Hey Pie-O-Neers™! There are quite a few issues that we have to be aware of during the month of October therefore we ABSOLUTELY CANNOT forget about Breast Cancer Awareness which is celebrated from Oct. 1st – Oct. 31st.  All month long we see the color “PINK” to bring awareness to the many women who are “SURVIVORS” of this deadly disease. Some of you are probably wondering… WHY DO WE WEAR PINK? Well, in 1990 the first breast cancer survivor program was launched at the “Susan G. Koman Race for a Cure” in Washington D.C. and that same year, pink buttons were made by the survivor program to help promote awareness and different programs for breast cancer.

This DELICIOIUS TIPS™ we are going to provide information on why AWARENESS IS SO IMPORTANT… Signs and Symptoms of breast cancer… As well as provide tips on getting tested… ETC… LET’S NOT WASTE ANYMORE TIME… AND DIVE RIGHT INTO THIS SLICE OF HUMBLE PIE!

 Why is Breast Cancer Awareness so important?

- Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in American women, other than skin cancers

- The average risk of a woman developing breast cancer is 12%, or a 1 in 8 chance

- The chance that a woman will die from breast cancer is 26%, or a 1 in 38 chance

- Breast cancer has to divide 30 times before it can be felt. Up to the 28th cell division before a doctor or yourself can detect it by hand

- Each division can take 1-2 months, by the time there is a lump the cancer has already been in your body for 2-5 years

 What Are Some Signs and Symptoms of Breast Cancer?

- Lump in the Breast or underarm (armpit)

- Swelling or thickening of all or parts of the breast

- Dimpling or skin irritation of breast skin

- Localized, or persistent breast pain

- Redness, scaliness or thickening of the nipple or breast skin

- Nipple discharge (other than breast milk)

- Any change in the size or shape of the breast

 Who is most likely to get Breast Cancer?

- Being a woman and getting older (most breast cancer is found in women 55 or older)

- Personal/Family History, Race, Breast Density and Menstrual Period History

- Lifestyle-related (Birth control pills, hormone therapy, menopause, having children, drinking alcohol, being overweight, and not being physically active)

 How Do I get Proper Screening?

- All women should have a risk assessment at age 30 to see if screening earlier than age 40 is needed

- Women at average breast cancer risk should begin screening at age 40

- Women previously diagnosed with breast cancer may also benefit from supplemental screening with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), especially if their cancer was diagnosed at or before the age of 50

 What Type of Screening is available?

- A mammogram is an X-ray exam of the breast used to detect and evaluate breast changes. Its detection ability depends on tumor size and breast tissue density

- Three-dimensional (3D) mammography is a type of digital mammography in which X-ray machines are used to take pictures of thin slices of the breast from different angles and computer software is used to reconstruct an image

- Breast ultrasound is often used along with mammography for high-risk women who cannot undergo MRI, and women with dense breast tissue

- A breast MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) may be used to screen high-risk women and gather more information about a suspicious area found on a mammogram or an ultrasound

World Mental Health Day (2020)

Hey Pie-O-Neers™! HAPPY WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY! October 10th has became the day that the world celebrates and brings awareness to mental illness and the major effects it has on peoples’ lives worldwide. Some countries go as far as to celebrate this illness all week, for instance Australia has “Mental Health Week”! WELL ALRIGHT AUSTRALIA… NOW THAT’S PIE-O-NEERING™! World Mental Health Day was celebrated for the first time on October 10, 1992 as an initiative, however it did not have a theme. It wasn’t until 1994 that it was celebrated with a theme of “Improving the Quality of Mental Health” and the GREEN RIBBON became the symbol to recognize mental illness. To keep the celebration going this DELICIOUS TIPS™, we’re serving some quick tips on how to spot mental illnesses within yourself and others. SO, GRAB YOUR UTINSILS… AND LET’S DIVE IN!

Symptoms that indicate the presence of Mental illness:

1. PROLONGED SADNESS – Everyone has bad days every now and then or rough patches throughout life. However, if an individual is separating themselves and disengaged for long periods of time and there is no true reason as to why they are feeling this way, they may have something really serious going on mentally, and may need treatment.

2. EXTREME HIGH AND LOWS – It is normal for our emotions to change throughout the day, but when an individual finds themselves being moody frequently and their feelings are extremely high or low they could be dealing with a mental illness.

3. SOCIAL WITHDRAWAL – Social activity is very important and it keeps the mind stimulated and engaged. When an individual is withdrawing from others and avoiding going out in public this is sign of mental illness. By doing this, a person is allowing themselves to shut down and sink deeper into their feelings of depression and loneliness.

4. ILLOGICAL THOUGHTS – We all worry or feel suspicious from time to time, but if a individual is constantly fighting off thoughts they know are not logical, they need to seek help. Some examples of illogical thoughts include thinking everyone dislikes you, devaluing yourself and paranoia.

5. CHANGES IN SLEEPING PATTERNS – Anytime one’s sleep cycle is off, their mental health can be affected. However, when this becomes a pattern and you are not able to get back on a normal sleep cycle you may be dealing with a mental illness and need to seek help.

6. CONFUSION OR REDUCED CONCENTRATION – Hormonal changes, emotional stress, and tiredness are all common causes of concentration issues. However, if individuals notice their concentration getting worse without any known cause, or they're experiencing persistent concentration problems that interfere with their day-to-day life, it may be a sign of a mental health disorder.

7. SHIFT IN EATING HABITS - Individuals who experience major shifts in their eating habits without any known physical cause could have a mental disorder. One of the most common shifts is a loss of appetite associated with depression.

8. DELUSIONS OR HALLUCINATIONS – Individuals affected by these two symptoms may have bizarre or unusual thought patterns, perceive sights and sounds that aren't there, or experience and express emotions oddly. These are significant symptoms of a mental health illness. 

9. PHYSICAL AILMENTS WITHOUT OBVIOUS CAUSE – Sometimes physical ailments may surface and there are no obvious causes such as full-body pain and fatigue. However for an unknown physical problem to be caused by a mental illness, patients have to experience some of these symptoms: stomach aches, headaches, joint pain and muscle aches.

Hey Pie-O-Neers™! If I had to combine a group of 3 words to describe the year 2020 thus far, I would have to say… “OUT OF CONTROL” pretty much sums it up for me. Wouldn’t you all agree? I mean, this year, every month, something has happened that was beyond any of our control… Now, I don’t know about you all but personally, I have felt helpless, powerless and unsure about what lies ahead for me and my family. That brings me to what this DELICIOUS TIPS is all about… ELECTION DAY 2020! That’s right! We are 41 days away from electing The President of The United States of America, that will be in the office for the next 4 years… and WE MUST GET OUT AND VOTE! By getting out and casting your VOTE you are... 1) HELPING YOURSELF AND THIS COUNTRY... 2) TAKING YOUR POWER BACK... 3) SECURING AND HAVING AN INPUT ON YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONE'S FUTURE... 4) YOU CAN KEEP ON PIE-O-NEERING™!

Now normally voting is a ritual that Americans are able to get out and go to the polls as a family on November 3rd (WHICH BY THE WAY IS ELECTION DAY) and cast their VOTES. However, this year (2020) due to the pandemic, the normal process of Election Day is no longer effective and could be dangerous due to COVID-19. The other option that a lot of Americans have utilized in the past is Mail-in Voting, which has worked great in the past however this year our current President, Donald Trump is trying to take this option away... WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY CRAZY!!

Developing a Coping Arsenal

Hey Pie-O-Neers™! With all that is going on in the world with the Corona Virus, George Floyd’s death, Black Lives Matter protests, Rioting, Looting and violence…. We as individuals still need to be able to cope and get throughout the day so that we can be effective Pie-O-Neers™ within our family!

With that being said, it is a GREAT IDEA to have a PERSONAL ARSENAL of healthy coping mechanisms to help you deal with each situation you face rather the attention is on your problems or emotions. Below are some suggested weapons that you can add to your arsenal….

When Facing Problems:

1. Take a Direct Approach! Find out if there are ways to handle the problem directly.

2. Make a Plan! Break the problem up into smaller pieces, then make a step by step plan to handle each portion of the problem, and work through each step until the problem is conquered.

3. Use Self-restraint! Don’t take on too much, don’t give into impulses that won’t help, slow down and think through things before acting

4. Get Advice! Someone else’s perspective on your problem can offer insight and other options on how to handle the problem.

When Facing Emotions:

1. Have Emotional Support on Standby! This is not the same as getting advice; you need people that you can express how you feel and they just listen to you.

2. Revision Stressful Situations! Look at what’s going on as a challenge instead of it being a threat. Focus on what you can control and not on what you can’t.

3. Own Your Feelings! By tuning in to how you are feeling, you discover that the feelings don’t last as long as if you ignore them. 

4. Tap Into a Healthy Level of Denial! This suggestion may seem weird but when you make yourself believe something is not a “Big Deal” you help yourself to not dwell on the problem until you are ready to address it.

5. Get Spiritual! When you believe in a power greater than yourself it helps with stress, you don’t feel alone, and it motivates you.

Take some time and reevaluate your current coping mechanisms, see if you need to get rid of some, and add these…. I AM SURE THEY WILL HELP YOU!

Celebrating Memorial Day during COVID-19 Pandemic

Hey Pie-O-Neers™! Happy Saturday! This weekend is a 3-day weekend due to us celebrating Memorial Day. This is a holiday that we acknowledge our loved ones that have lost their lives while fighting for our nation. However, in my family we also use it as a time to simply honor all of our loved ones that have transitioned and we do this by normally gathering with one another and doing things like:

1. Visiting the cemeteries where they are laid to rest

2. Having family and friends over for a BBQ

3. Going to a public place such as a; beach, park, or amusement park

These are all great things to do, but not very wise at this time when our nation is dealing with the current COVID-19 Pandemic, but because I recognize that yawl are “GROWN” and that yawl are “Going to do what you want to do, BECAUSE THAT'S YOUR BUSINESS”, let me provide you with a few “DELICIOUS TIPS™” to help you enjoy your holiday and be safe while doing it.

Have A Plan! Being prepared is “ESSENTIAL” and necessary. Know who you are going to invite to join you for the holiday in whatever you do. Make the guest list small and keep it in the family. Also, plan out your menu…How, when, and where you will be preparing and serving it is important! Decide where your party space is going to be… If at all possible make sure your holiday is spent outside!

Keep Your Distance! When visiting with family, cemeteries or other public places make sure you maintain your social distancing. In this case 6ft apart at all times! No physical touching!

Socialize Safely! Once again, distance is a must, but you also should be wearing mask during conversation with others (THIS REALLY APPLIES TO THE LOUD PEOPLE… WINK), creating physical barriers is also important and you do this by simply spreading seats/tables apart from one another.

Have A Blast! Make sure the kiddos are having a great time but their interactions are limited and you do this by avoiding games that cause them to be close for long periods of time. Get them off them off the video games, like the wiser folks would say “GO ON OUTSIDE SOMEWHERE”! Avoid contact sports by playing some baseball or doing some swimming!

Clean Up! This is the most important in my opinion! Everyone can participate in this activity by disposing of their own garbage, WASHING THEIR HANDS, and sanitizing their area. Now, if you’re like me… You will be deep cleaning once everyone leaves…But at least you allowed them to do their part!

We as a nation have already lost so many people to this deadly virus and this weekend will most likely hit the milestone of 100,000 American lives lost to COVID-19, so let’s be GREAT AMERICANS and honor our nation and those who have lost their lives by using these “DELICOUS TIPS™” and STAYING SAFE!

Finding Joy Within

Hey Pie-O-Neers™! Here are some tips on bringing more joy into your life:

1) Make a list of the things that bring you joy

2) Do something every day that makes you smile

3) Make fun a priority

Here are some examples:

*If you love music, turn on your favorite songs and start dancing for 30 minutes! It will change your whole mood!

*If you love to cook, go to your local store and buy the ingredients you need and cook your favorite meal. Bon Appétit!

*Love yourself more. After you take your shower, put on your favorite clothes, shoes, fragrance, jewelry...whatever makes you feel good. When you look good, you feel good!

*Change your attitude from bitter to sweet. You can be beautiful on the outside but bitter on the inside. Forgive yourself and others and start the healing process!

Hello Pie-o-neers™! This week we are celebrating our Mothers. Since we are unable to take them to their favorite restaurant due to shelter-in-place orders, why not bring their favorite restaurant to them?

Spouses and are some "Delicious Tips" you can do to make her Mother's Day great:

✔Choose a restaurant. Check your local listings for some of your top-notch restaurants to order your Mother’s Day meal and have it picked up or delivered.

✔ Ambiance is key. Provide a beautiful ambiance by setting up your home restaurant-style. Include fresh flowers as a centerpiece, her favorite candles for a wonderful fragrance and decorations to make the experience enjoyable.

✔Dress up. Dress yourself up as if you are the Host, Cook and/or Waitress.

✔Make a reservation. Let her know you have made reservations at her favorite restaurant. Provide the location and time and advise her of the dress code.

✔Create a magical experience for her. Trust me, it will be (if not the best) one of the top five greatest Mother’s Day experiences her existence! Make it happen Pie-o-neers and have a Wonderful Mother's Day!
